Baby News and Updated Kits

Hey, so those of you who backed the kickstarter will know already from my update that my daughter Thalia was born last week! She's doing great, as is the whole family. My other daughters absolutely love taking care of her. Her arrival has meant that I won't be posting any official deadlines, but I can tell you that I've been able to keep working.

As an example of the work that's going on, I just did an editing pass on Kits today, and the file has been updated with the latest here. This has not only a bunch of Mini-Kits with advances for you to take outside of the main kits, but also includes Reputations, which allow you to have greater influence as word of your deeds spreads.

I'm also happy to post up a schedule for mini-expansions here.
August: Vehicles
September: New Class: The Rogue
October: Urban Fantasy Skin for the sample Adventure
After that, I'm thinking of putting out a collection of "magic systems" with different feels, as well as working on more new classes: the shieldbearer was a popular pick, so it will probably be next.

I'm also very excited about this Fall's X-COM 2 release, and with that in mind I have started sketching out ideas for UFO Strike! This will be a version of Strike specifically made for fighting aliens. It'll be great for playing in a world like that of X-COM, but it'll also include other fun variations like playing as the aliens. This project is larger than a mini-expansion, and if things go well, you can expect this to be my next major release. First things first, though: I have to get the core book done and out the door before I start putting time into the next thing.

It's Alive!

More editing, more talking about layout, more fiddling with the last finicky little irritating things. That's what went on this week. I've had to start making the little decisions I've been putting off while there was still other work to do. It's not much fun right now, but seeing my to-do list dwindling is pretty satisfying.

I've also got some monsters for you! Here are the monsters from the backers at the Dr. Frankenstein level. If you backed at that level and haven't replied yet to tell me about your monster, you should get on it - time is slipping away!

Check out the monsters here.

As for art, my wife happened to have done a cool little drawing of a pretty monstrous wasp a while ago, which goes perfectly with one of the monsters in that document.

Testing and Editing

With the bulk of the stretch goals written now, I'm transitioning to focusing on editing and playtesting. The first playtest of Adversarial play was a success, and we'll be moving up to harder challenges to see how it holds up. Meanwhile, I've been in contact with folks who are helping me pick out all the little places where the writing is unclear so that I can clarify it. I've got a big list of edits to work on.

I'll also be starting work on writing the extra backer rewards: the 1-page for the Font of Wisdom, the monsters, and the optional rules.

So there's no new content for you to preview this week, but that awesome Roles illustration I teased last week is ready now.

It's going around

My whole family spent the weekend terribly sick, so I lost a few days in which I could work on Strike! Even so, I did manage to get some stuff done. Today I'll show you a draft of half of the Adversarial Play stretch goal: Invasion. The other half, about dungeon crawling (and its equivalents in other genres), will have to wait, likely for next week.

Invasion overlays a Team Conflict and a scene framing structure on top of normal play, forming a superstructure that can fairly adjudicate the high-level outcome of the invasion, while the details are worked out through play. The DM can thus focus on playing to make things real and make things interesting in the roleplay while going all-out to try win in the over-arching conflict. Here it is!

Just got one piece of art in this week: turns out Yuri got sick, too. It's going around, I guess. This is another of William's pieces.

Other Worlds

Time for another weekly update! This time you get a good look at Other Worlds. I've been busy filing the serial numbers off some setting elements and adapting them to Strike! If you're a fan of either of the two settings I'm referencing here, then I want your opinion - you can send me feedback easily on the contact page.

Click here to see the preview.

You always get some art here, right? Well today is no exception, and it's a good one. This might just be my favourite of Yuri's class portraits - the Summoner!

Big Bads

Well, another week has gone by, and progress is continuing. I’ve been wrapping up work on Titans and continuing to flesh out the system(s) for adversarial play. I can show you the basic rules for Titans now, simple as they are. I’ve also been putting together some examples of Titans, but I don’t have them all formatted up yet, so I can’t really show them. Obviously, these rules will go in with the monster creation rules, so if you’re not familiar with those then you should read them first. If you’re familiar with the monster rules and still don’t understand part of it, that means I need to write better, so please let me know! Feedback really does help a ton with targeting which parts of the rules need better explanation. Get them here!

I also got an itch and wrote an extra piece for the DM section on villains! This isn’t one of the stretch goals, but I think it’s a cool addition. Of course, the mechanical parts here are optional, just like the other content in the DMing section (e.g. pacing rolls or the disposition table), but even if you don’t care for the mechanics, the directions and descriptions should help to get you thinking about how to play a villain and show the players what the villain is really all about. Check it out here!

As always, there’s more art coming in. This one is for Adversarial Play.

Status Update and Poll Results

Hey, so I've got enough of the survey results in that I can declare the winners for what will be the first mini-expansions. The first class mini-expansion will be the Rogue! The Shieldbearer was close, but the Rogue edged it out. The first genre for a new skin of the adventure is Urban Fantasy - and that vote wasn't particularly close.

The past week, I've finished up a lot more work on Kits, and begun development on Adversarial Play. See all twelve Kits here. The file is updated with new content, edited versions of the previous content, a bit more explanation for what Kits do, and nicer formatting. Please send feedback! I loooove feedback!

If you checked it out last week, you'll notice that the Wizard is now gone. There was a lot of discussion about the Wizard, and about whether it was too strong or too broad or not, but the problem turned out to be something entirely different. The problem was that the Wizard was undermined by simple skill rolls. The Wizard kit was requiring you to spend resources to achieve things that could generally be achieved by rolling your skills without spending points. So it had to go. The psychic had some major problems too, along similar lines, and got a major edit as a result. Will there be a new Wizard? I won't say definitely not, because if the right spirit strikes me it'll happen... but it's not a priority right now, and I'm more concerned with making sure the Kits that are already there are as strong as they can be.

Kits and more

I'm a couple of days behind on my writing right now. Having kids home for March break is disruptive, especially when they and my wife are sick. My brother and his wife just had their first daughter, which is very exciting. I'm applying for fall jobs. I despise job applications, but I love having a job - what a quandary. Anyway, all this adds up to the fact that Kits aren't complete yet, but I have made some progress and you can expect to see the Kits up here by next week. I've built enough slack into the schedule that these couple of days should not have any impact on the timeline for the release. Art+Layout is the binding constraint in terms of time.

For content, here is a fan-made combat reference sheet (credit to Cadwyn)
to complement the official out-of-combat player reference sheet. (If you haven't seen that one, grab it here.)

In the meantime, while you're waiting for Kits, you can have a peek at some of the art I've been getting back lately. This week we've got a Katana theme!
